Black and gold stapler Ellepi

The stapler is an object that could almost be considered obsolete today. And yet the stapler as we know it today is not so old… If the design of the Ellepi stapler looks so familiar, it’s because it was the first model of its kind to be introduced in the 1980s.

Well-designed objects are the most durable. A true embodiment of this axiom, the Ellepi stapler, designed in 1984 by Italian designer Oscar Lepre, has become a stationery classic and a must-have for any well-equipped office. Still made in Italy, near Milan, by a small team of craftsmen, its design has not changed over the past forty years. And for good reason, as its robustness and ergonomics are now legendary.

The black and gold version stands out from its coloured cousins with its elegant and delightfully retro appearance.

Did you know that early staplers could only staple one staple at a time? It was indeed necessary to recharge the device for each new stapling. So was this really an evolution from the simple paper clips, invented only a few years before?

Whatever the answer to this question, models quickly evolved and, by the end of the 19th century, it was possible to load several staples… but it had to be done manually, one by one! The staples were not welded together and had to be placed individually in the device. It was not until the 1920s that the first staple bars as we know them today appeared. We invite you to discover the eventful history of the stapler on the Early Office Museum website.

When the Ellepi stapler was created in the 1980s, its design, now widely adopted by other manufacturers, was a great novelty. It allowed a complete grip of the object and a much better ergonomics than its competitors.
